The Renaissance in Italian: Rinascimento, from rinascere "to be reborn" was a cultural movement that spanned the period roughly from the 14th to the 17th century, beginning in Italy in the Late Middle Ages and later spreading to the rest of Europe creating not only Italian Renaissance furniture, but also Spanish Renaissance furniture, French Renaissance furniture, German Renaissance furniture, Austrian Renaissance furniture, Dutch Renaissance furniture, Portuguese Renaissance furniture, English Renaissance furniture. . Although the Renaissance saw revolutions in many intellectual pursuits, as well as social and political upheaval, it is perhaps best known for its artistic developments and the contributions of such polymaths as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, who inspired the term "Renaissance man".

The first Mediterranean/Italian Renaissance Revival buildings were built in the United States starting in the early 1900s. These styles became popular in Los Angeles in the nineteen-teens. The Mediterranean Revival style is loosely based on Italian seaside villas from the sixteenth century. The style was particularly prevalent in Southern California, because of a popular association of the California coast with Mediterranean resorts. The Renaissance Revival style is loosely based on Italian palazzos of the sixteenth century. It was usually used in particularly grand homes where an imposing style was required. Part of the popularity of the Renaissance Revival style grew out of the vogue at the turn of the last century for the distinction and “polish” of familiarity with European architectural and artistic styles. These styles were usualy mixed together, creating a hybrid style. Mediterranean/Italian Renaissance Revival structures tend to be relatively massive, with symmetrical primary facades, a rectangular floorplan, Classical, Spanish or Beaux Arts details, and gardens. Elements of the Mediterranean/Italian Renaissance Revival style can be found mixed with the Beaux Arts and Spanish Colonial Revival styles.

The Mediterranean Revival was an eclectic design style that was first introduced in the United States about the end of the nineteenth century, and became popular during the 1920s and 1930s. The style evolved from renewed interest in the Italian Renaissance architecture of palaces and seaside villas dating from the sixteenth century, and can be found mainly in the states of California and Florida due to the popular association of these coastal regions with Mediterranean resorts.

Architects August Geiger and Addison Mizner did much to popularize this style in Florida; while Bertram Goodhue, Sumner Spaulding, and Paul Williams did likewise in California. Structures are typically multi-story and based on a rectangular floor plan, and feature massive, symmetrical primary façades. Mediterranean Revival is characterized generally by stuccoed wall surfaces, flat or low-pitched terra cotta and tile roofs, arches, scrolled or tile-capped parapet walls and articulated door surrounds. Feature detailing is occasionally executed with keystones.

Balconies and window grilles are common, and are generally made of wrought iron or wood. Ornamentation can be simple or dramatic, and may use various Mediterranean references. Classical, Spanish Renaissance, Spanish Colonial, and Beaux-Arts architecture details are often incorporated into the design, as are lush gardens.

The style was most commonly applied to hotels, apartment buildings, commercial structures, and even modest residences. Mediterranean Revival was one of several architectural styles used extensively by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe and Southern Pacific Railroad companies when designing their train stations in California.

These influences can be found throughout Mexico, Central America and South America including Brazil, Columbia, Peru,
